You must pay attention to many things so that your shots are attractive and aesthetically pleasing. Avoid combining single solid colors when photographing objects with the concept of black and white photos. Not interesting, your shots will be unclear and will only appear dark or even just white.

When doing a black and white photo, pay attention to the light. The contrast between the dark light is what will give shape to the object in the photo. Notice where the light comes from. Usually, the light from the side (either up / down or right / left) will provide more contrast.

For example to show facial lines. But the light from behind can make interesting photos, like making rim lights or silhouettes. To increase the contrast of the photo, we can use a filter on the lens (or if available in the camera application).

RAW

The next tip for producing good black and white photos is to use the RAW format. If, the camera has the RAW format, then maximize the format. By using the RAW format in black and white photo tips it will be easier to fiddle with the raw files as expected.

In addition, you can be more creative because there are more photo processing options, and it is hoped that if you use the RAW format, more information will be stored.

Make sure you select the Monochrome Picture Control setting so that the display on the camera LCD looks black and white. However, make sure that when RAW photo files are viewed on a computer, you will still get color information. This is what distinguishes it from JPG files.

However, if the camera does not have RAW. You can use JPG to produce black and white photos. The color photos from JPG can be converted into black and white photos using Photoshop on a computer.

Some digital cameras are equipped with Black and White mode, so take advantage of this feature to produce black and white photos directly from the camera. But if there is only the choice of photographing colors, the process of conversion to black and white can be done from a computer.

ISO

The next tip for producing good black and white photos is ISO. In photography, ISO figures are an indication of image sensor sensitivity, where higher numbers indicate higher sensitivity. The higher the ISO, you have the opportunity to take pictures with low lighting, without using the help of a flash.

When you shoot black and white photos, use the lowest ISO. If you use a high ISO then the noise will be seen more clearly. Noise in photography is like grain or points of density of images in film.

When too much noise, the quality of the resulting photo is also not as smooth as you want. The higher the ISO you use, the “unpleasant” dots will be displayed on your photo. The right time to produce BW photos is when it is shady or when the sun is dim.

Tone

Black and white photographs have a series of gray scales that produce a black and white spectrum. If the gray scale is “played” then it can be a different color and has a different depth from the basic gray color.

So, when we talk about the gray scale it will be related to how we measure the tonnes, resulting in different concentrations. Normally, you will see photographic subjects that can be translated into a series of tones from black to white.

Low Key or High Key

The next tip for producing good black and white photos is to choose a low key or high key. Make sure that is what you want. For those of you who don’t understand, low key is a photo with minimal lighting, while the high key serves to eliminate all types of shadows and illuminate the subject with diffused light or use exposure compensation if needed.
